For this verse, I'm tweaking things a little bit. We know Peter is seventeen so I'm going to just say he was a junior in school (shhhh) and sort of twist the end. Instead of him deciding to break his promise, he kept his promise. He finished up his junior year. The Avengers recruited him and told him they'd keep Aunt Mae and Gwen safe if he came with them. He agreed. he spent the summer with them. Fury talked to Aunt Mae and convinced her that it would be the best thing for Peter and they'd take care of him.

Now he's going to a new school in his senior year and time is progressing with present time.
